Spit Braai Catering, South Peninsula

Muizenberg, Lakeside, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, Noordhoek, Kommetjie, Scarborough and Simon's Town. The two things that actually change the plan down here are the single road past Fish Hoek and, in the troop areas, the baboons - an open fire with meat on it is an attraction and it gets planned for.

Spit braai catering in the South Peninsula

Muizenberg, Lakeside, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, Clovelly, Sun Valley, Noordhoek, Kommetjie, Scarborough, Simon’s Town and Glencairn. Beautiful to cook in, and the two variables are the road and the wildlife.

What is different down here

One road in, and it decides the timing

Ou Kaapse Weg, Boyes Drive and the M4 through Muizenberg are the ways in, and past Fish Hoek it is effectively a single road to Simon’s Town. A whole lamb is a five to seven hour cook that has to start on time, so we build the drive into the plan rather than hoping. Summer weekend traffic through Muizenberg is real and we allow for it.

Baboons

This is not a joke and it is the thing visiting caterers get wrong. In Simon’s Town, Da Gama Park, Glencairn, Scarborough and parts of Kommetjie, an open fire with meat on it is an attraction. The chef stays with the spit for the whole cook anyway, which is most of the answer, but the carving table and the sides need covering and somebody watching, and doors and windows on the house side should stay shut. If your property is in a troop’s range, say so and we plan the layout around it.

Salt air and wind

Kommetjie, Scarborough and Noordhoek take the south-easter and the south-wester both. Same answer as the West Coast — shelter, lee side, extra time.

What we need on site

WhatWhy
About three metres square, level, on ground rather than a wooden deckThe spit and the fire stand there for five to seven hours
Vehicle access within carrying distanceThe frame, motor and coals come off the vehicle
Somewhere to stand the vehicle during the cookThe equipment stays on site all day
A tapCleaning down. No power is needed — the spit runs on coals and its own gas

Every area we cook in

If your area is on this list, travel is included and the rate is the same R180 a head. The chef simply leaves earlier for the far end of the peninsula.

Places people mix up

Muizenberg and Lakeside are the northern end of the South Peninsula, not the Southern Suburbs. Simon’s Town, Glencairn and Da Gama Park are separate from Fish Hoek, and Noordhoek and Sun Valley are separate from Kommetjie.

Suburbs and neighbourhoods

Level ground and vehicle access, plus the drive: past Fish Hoek it is effectively one road, so the chef leaves earlier rather than cutting the cook short.

Estates, golf and country villages

Gate access arranged first, and in the troop areas we plan the carving table and covers around the baboons.

Smallholdings, farms and rural addresses

Travel confirmed on the quote, with water and a level, sheltered spot checked first.

South Peninsula questions

Do you travel to Simon’s Town and Scarborough?

Yes. Both are covered and inside the included band. The chef simply leaves earlier.

Are baboons actually a problem for a spit braai?

Yes, in the areas where troops range — Simon’s Town, Da Gama Park, Glencairn, Scarborough and parts of Kommetjie. It is managed by keeping the chef on the fire, covering the carving table and the sides, and closing up the house side. Tell us and we plan for it.

Can you cater a Noordhoek beach or farm wedding?

Yes — see wedding catering. Open Noordhoek sites need wind shelter planned in, and vehicle access to the spot needs checking first.
