Spit Braai Catering in Cape Town, Run by a Chef

Spit Braai Catering in Cape Town, Run by a Chef

Spit braai catering in Cape Town, cooked by a chef rather than dropped off as equipment. A working chef arrives before your guests, spit-roasts over coals for the full five to seven hours, carves to order at the table and clears the site before leaving. Lamb, pork or chicken, halaal on request, R230 a head all in.

A chef comes with the fire

Most spit braai outfits in Cape Town drop off equipment and leave you to it. We don't. Every Spit Braai Pro booking includes a qualified spit braai chef who arrives ahead of your guests, lights the coals, turns and bastes the meat for the full cook, carves to order at the table and takes the equipment away afterwards. You are hiring the cook, not the machine.

Lamb, pork or chicken

Whole A-grade lamb over coals is the classic. Pork and chicken carry the same R230 rate, so the choice is about the meat you want, not the budget. See whole lamb, pork and chicken on the spit.

Halaal on request

Halaal-friendly: a halaal butcher, dedicated equipment and a separate prep chain. We are not certified ourselves and we say so plainly. See halaal catering.

What a Spit Braai Pro booking includes

  • A chef on site for the whole cook — typically five to seven hours before serving
  • The spit, coals, gas where needed, and all cooking equipment
  • Meat sourced, prepped and marinated the day before
  • Carving and serving at your event
  • Equipment broken down and removed the same night

What you provide: a level patch of ground roughly three metres square, out of heavy wind, and access to a tap. That is genuinely it.

Spit roasting is slow, indirect cooking over coals with constant rotation, and it is the whole reason the meat stays moist across a five-hour cook. What we sell is somebody who can hold that fire steady for the entire time. If you would rather do the cooking yourself, we also do spit braai hire — the equipment on its own, delivered and collected.

What spit braai catering costs in Cape Town

R230 per person, all in, from 50 guests upward. No call-out fee, no delivery charge and no charge to quote — the chef, the crew and the travel are inside the rate rather than added after it. Below 50 guests we quote per event, because a chef standing at a fire for seven hours and a vehicle crossing the city cost the same whether they are feeding 25 people or 80.

What to ask a spit braai caterer

Most spit braai caterers in Cape Town quote the same way, which makes the quotes hard to compare and easy to get wrong. Four questions separate them, and they are worth asking whoever you book:

AskWhy it mattersOurs
Is a chef included, or are you dropping equipment?A spit is not a self-cooking machine. Someone has to hold a fire for five to seven hoursA qualified chef, included, no separate fee
What is not in the per-head price?Sides, staff, delivery and equipment are commonly billed on top of an attractive headline rateR230 covers all of it. Glassware and alcohol are not ours
What is the minimum headcount?A low per-head rate with a 35-guest minimum is a different product from a low rate at 50R230 runs from 50; below that we quote per event and say so
Who carves, and when?Meat held in a chafing dish for an hour is a worse meal than meat carved to orderThe chef who cooked it, at the spit, to order

We are a spit braai caterer rather than a general caterer, which is a narrower thing on purpose: one service, cooked properly, at one rate. If you want canapés and a plated three-course menu, we are the wrong firm and will say so rather than quote badly for it.

Where we cook

Greater Cape Town, the Northern and Southern Suburbs, the Helderberg and out into the Winelands. Spit Braai Pro is based in Durbanville and travel is included inside roughly 60km of the city, so for most of Cape Town searching for a spit braai near you, the answer is yes and the rate does not change. Full list on areas we serve.

Four localities have a page of their own, because what changes about the day genuinely differs between them: spit braai Durbanville, which is where the equipment is kept, spit braai Somerset West, where the wind off Sir Lowry's Pass sets the schedule, spit braai Brackenfell, where most of the ground sits behind a boom, and spit braai Kuilsriver, where the halls take the larger headcounts.

Common questions

How much does a spit braai cost in Cape Town?

R230 per person, all in. The same rate whether you choose lamb, pork or chicken, and the same rate for halaal. That figure covers the chef, the equipment, the cook, the carving and the clear-up — it is not a meat-only price. What moves it is broken down below.

How many people can a spit braai feed?

One whole lamb feeds 35 to 45 guests as the main protein. Past that we run a second spit rather than stretch the first. A whole pig of 25 to 30kg feeds 50 to 60, and for chicken allow about half a bird each — all three are on the lamb, pork and chicken spit page.

How much does it cost to hire a spit braai?

R650 a day for a charcoal spit and R950 for a gas spit, plus a refundable R500 deposit. That is the equipment only — you supply the meat, the coals and the cook. Chef-run catering with everything included is R230 a head instead. See spit braai hire prices.

How many people do you cater for?

From around 25 guests up to about 400. Below 25 a spit is usually the wrong tool and we will tell you so rather than sell you one.

How far in advance should I book?

Two to three weeks is comfortable. December, and Saturdays between October and March, go early — those want six weeks or more.

Do you cater halaal?

Yes, halaal-friendly — a halaal butcher, dedicated equipment and a separate prep. We hold no halaal certification and do not claim to. See halaal spit braai catering.
